Delphine Knight went all out for Christmas and Boxing Day. She worked side by side with the house staff to decorate the home on the cliffs with holiday decorations and had eagerly overseen the lines of packaged parcels streaming into the house by carrier vans. The whole house smelled of spiced meats, stews, baked goods—a spread that would be way more than the group of them could eat.

But Delphine would make sure the staff took whatever they wanted home and that security walking the perimeter outside would also be fed and taken care of. She knew they had to work—they had all worked during a holiday before—but it didn’t lessen Delphine’s motherly guilt that anyone was away from their family because of her.

When the group got downstairs, each awakened by Patience under Delphine’s instructions, they were taken aback by the house’s transformation into a winter wonderland that looked like it had come straight out of a Macy’s or Harrods window display. Keigel’s eyes were biggest of all because he wasn’t accustomed to Delphine’s eccentricities, although he was getting used to them.

Nena stood off to the side, letting everyone chatter and exclaim over the gifts Delphine and Noble had gotten for them. She didn’t touch hers. She rarely did. Through the years, the Knights had learned to not overwhelm Nena with gifts she’d never find a practical use for. Nena found her satisfaction in always knowing what each person wanted the most. Cigars, pipes, or some sort of soccer paraphernalia from Dad’s favorite teams, of which he had many. Mum liked books; she liked to lose herself in different worlds, she’d once told Nena as a teen, and Nena remembered that. Ever since then, she’d find a first edition of whatever her mother fancied that year, and she’d get it for her. Elin was the easiest of all. She liked to shop, but she hated to be shopped for. Thus Nena often gifted her shopping sprees. Elin could never have enough shopping sprees.

“Georgia, come sit next to me,” Noble said above the low noise of rustling paper and opened boxes. “I’ve got one more thing for you.”

Georgia’s eyes shone. She’d already been bestowed a new MacBook, some money from Elin—to get her a better wardrobe, Elin had said—a camera, a multitude of multicolored bracelets from the bead kiosk in the market in Koforidua from Keigel, which she loved the most because they went with the beaded belt she’d asked Nena to tie around her waist when they’d visited the market a couple of days ago. With the rows of bracelets and the waist beads, Georgia was beginning to look more like she’d been born and raised here. Seeing the way her face lit up was the best gift Nena could have hoped for. Honestly, having all her favorite people here—even Witt, who rarely attended family events and would likely leave soon, had flown in that day—was a present Nena would have never even hoped for.

While Noble waited patiently for Georgia to
